What causes OCD isn’t always clear, but several factors are thought to play a role, including:

  • Life events – some OCD suffered develop the condition as a result of trauma, neglect, abuse, bullying, childbirth or bereavement.
  • Family members with OCD – you are more likely to develop OCD if a family member has it (though this does not mean that it is genetic).
  • Experiences growing up – many people with OCD might have experienced strict parents leading to feelings that things have to be right or done a certain way.
  • Difficulty with anxiety – people with anxiety might be more likely to experience intrusive thoughts, and OCD.
  • Personality traits – some people are naturally meticulous and methodical or have high levels of anxiety, which can make OCD more likely (for example, perfectionism is related strongly with OCD).
